Bruce Norris

Northwestern Alum Bruce Norris

Norris’ 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy-drama Clybourne Park puts a new spin on Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun. The play cleverly examines both real estate and race relations in a northwest Chicago neighborhood fifty years apart. In 1959, a white couple sets off a community controversy when they inadvertently sell their bungalow to the area’s first black family. Half-a-century later, gentrification issues arise when a black couple clashes with a white couple who want to buy and demolish the house. The entire original Playwrights Horizons’ off-Broadway cast, Crystal A. Dickinson, Brendan Griffin, Damon Gupton, Christina Kirk, Annie Parisse, Jeremy Shamos and Frank Wood, reunite along with original director Pam MacKinnon for this production at the Mark Taper Forum.

Cindy Chupack grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduated from Medill, then moved to New York City to work in advertising. She sold her first humorous essay to a magazine in 1990, and the piece was spotted by a TV writer/producer who encouraged her to pursue comedy writing, which she’s been doing ever since, winning three Golden Globes and an Emmy for her work as a writer/executive producer of HBO’s Sex and the City.  She created the NBC series Love Bites, and recently became a writer/co-executive producer of ABC’s Modern Family. The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (St. Martin’s Press) was a New York Times bestseller that has been translated into nine languages. Ms. Chupack has written humorous essays about dating and relationships for many publications including two — Glamour and O, The Oprah Magazine — where she had her own column. She is currently working on her second book, a memoir called The Longest Date: Life as a Wife for Viking. She lives in Marina Del Rey, Calif., with her husband and baby daughter. For more on Cindy or her book, visit www.betweenboyfriends.com.

Attica Locke’s first novel, Black Water Rising, was shortlisted for the prestigious Orange Prize in the UK in 2010.  It was nominated for a 2010 Edgar Award, an NAACP Image Award, as well as a Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a Strand Magazine Critics Award.  The novel was also a finalist for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award.  In addition, Attica has spent many years working as a screenwriter, penning movie and television scripts for Paramount, Warner Bros, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, HBO, Dreamworks and Silver Pictures.  She was a fellow at the Sundance Institute’s Feature Filmmakers Lab and is a graduate of Northwestern University.  A native of Houston, Texas, Attica lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband and daughter.  She is a member of the board of directors for the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.  Most recently, she wrote the introduction for the UK publication of Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying.  Her second book is The Cutting Season, coming soon. For more information, visit www.atticalocke.com.

In his true story, States of Confusion: My 19,000-Mile Detour to Find Direction (Adams Media), Minneapolis native Paul Jury sets out on the ballsiest thing he’s ever done in his life: rather than deal with the problems he’s facing as a recent Northwestern grad, he decides to leave them in his rearview mirror and travel to all 48 contiguous United States. Since landing in Los Angeles at the end of the trip, Paul has written comedy primarily for the internet, occasionally blogging for Huffington Post, Cracked, Manolith, plus some sites of his own. He also worked for Break.com for two years making original viral shorts and has also written award-winning children’s stories and a children’s musical, Barely a Bear. Paul’s website is www.paulpjury.com.
